Welcome to the home page of the Italian section! Below, you will find more information about the website, the activities and the final task.
Audience and context
This website has been designed for students studying languages at the University of Portsmouth. More specifically it has been designed for students who started to learn a language at ab-initio and who are now studying at Grade 3&4.
The main aim of this website is to help you prepare for your year abroad. Whether you have chosen to do a study placement or to work as an English Language Assistant, the variety of activities and tasks in each section should help you acquire some specific vocabulary, whislt working on your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills in Italian.
Blended Learning Resources
This website contains a variety of blended learning resources. This means that you will conduct both in-class and distance learning activities. In order for this distinction to be clear, the title of each activity is colour-coded. In-class activities have a purple title, while distance learning activities have a blue title.
In each section of the website, you will work on a variety of authentic documents (videos, articles or texts). Moreover, you will have the opportunity to revise some grammar points and to access methodological help. These will help you carry out the different activities and tasks.
The website
There are six main sections to this website and each section is linked to the year abroad.
The first section is an introduction to studying abroad. Throughout this section, you will learn about the Erasmus programme, exchange on the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad and write an informative text.
In the second section, you will learn about the Italian education system. You will look at the organisation of primary, secondary and higher education in Italy. You will also compare the Italian education system with yours and look at the differences between countries.Finally, you will create a glossary.
The third section focuses on the universities which are partners with the University of Portsmouth. Throughout this section, you will learn about the universities and the towns and will carry out oral presentations.
In section four, you will learn more about the daily life of Italian students. You will work on a video which has been recorded with an Italian student currently studying at the University of Portsmouth.
The fifth section focuses on student accommodation. You will find out more about the different types of student accommodation.
Finally, the sixth section is your final task. You will be invited to re-use and expand the knowledge you have acquired throughout the first five sections in an interview, which you will have to record with a Italian student studying in Portsmouth.
Your final task
The final task is in fact the second conversational video, which you have to hand-in in week 18, as part of your assessment. For this task, you will be asked to record an interview with a native speaker. You will have to ask the student questions about daily student life in Italy, give your opinion and compare Italy and Britain. More information is available on the section 6 page.
The forum
You will find a forum in the bar menu. The aim of the forum is to encourage you to interact with fellow students and with your tutor. You will be encouraged to take part in various conversations and react to some information you have learnt. You can also use the forum to ask questions to your tutor.
Resources and tools
In order to guide you, you will find a “resources” page in the drop down menu. It contains a list of online resources such as dictionaries or conjugation tables.
